Fitness seems to be the one thing we are all after - check out any magazine shelf and it will be overflowing with magazines on the topic...the only thing is, like us, you might find the information barrage overwhelming.

We work in the fitness industry and, sometimes, its too much even for us to manage! Low carb, low fat, high rep, low rep, what should you be doing? Bookmarking this site and reading it regularly is the answer. We analyse the news, the information, the hype and weed out the crap and give you all the good stuff here!

You won't be reading about the latest choreography steps for a dance aerobics class, booty pimp, or whatever its called nowadays. We won't be discussing the perfect position for your arms whilst power walking. So if that's where your interest lies then we don't think this blog is for you - keep an open mind and read it though and please leave comments, constructive ones, and we will learn something too.

Kettlebells and grip training - part 3

Having explained how to use the hand alignment for the clean and snatch so that the weight is distributed through the forearm rather than the wrist, we will now cover how to minimise chewing the hands as the handle rotates in the palm. The trick is actually not to let the handle rotate in palm, but to move the hand from a hook grip to a palm rest while the kettlebell is coming to rest. This action takes the friction out of the movement as for a brief second there is minimal contact between the hand and the kettlebell.

Grip training and kettlebell training part 2

Following from last week we will now cover the grip part of kettlebell training in detail.

Grip training and kettlebell training part 1

The perfect match

Kettlebell and grip training have so many crossovers for me that they are almost the same thing-

The amount of reps you can perform is limited by your grip endurance.

The weight of the kettlebell you can use is limited by your grip strength.

While I appreciate this is very generalised, it is also very true. Your hip complex and quads will always outlast your hands with any swing exercise and the snatch is known as the hand destroyer for a good reason.

FitFlop review, functional footwear, part 2

Can your shoes really get you fit?
My favourite example of the marketing in functional footwear has to be FitFlops. Probably because of the long, tanned legs on the poster but I digress. From an fitness science perspective my first concern is where's the evidence?

The marketing slogan is "It's the flip flop with the gym built in. Put a pair on and get a workout while you walk" - unfortunately, in my opinion, it fails to do that on several levels.

"Functional Footwear" - consumer review, part 1

A bit about the foot
The human body is a feat of mechanical and biological engineering - the sheer complexity and elegance is astounding. What's even more incredible is how well it works. We rarely pay much attention to it, subject it to an array of abuse and it keeps going, resilient and reliable...most of the time anyway.

And our feet tend to be the one area that receives the least attention. With a quarter of the bones in the body, thirty three joints and over a hundred muscles, the foot is complex...but, we barely seem to be able to use them for much except walking on! So what can we do about this?

Kettlebells - Weight Training Women Enjoy

I've been training with kettlebells since 2002 - way before Ginger Spice got her dainty little mitts on them and I originally used them to improve my strength and conditioning for martial arts.

The first seminar I attended had a mix of gentlemen, well let's just say that if you saw them out in public you'd be worried about what prison day release schemes were for, involved in combat sports, rugby and general hard nuts. Nice bunch though!

Skipping forwards a few years I find that kettlebells have grown immensely in popularity and amongst women the curiousity (and publicity) is immense.

So I thought it was high time that the proper reasons why women (should) love kettlebells were explained properly and we'll clear up a few myths about weight training in general.

Steve gets banned from his local pound shop

As a little treat I thought I would show you what I get up to when shopping. When not training I usually sleep or eat and recently found a way to combine shopping with training so sit back and enjoy some fun at the local DIY store.

After much gripping, filming and then realising we had something great for you guys, we finally stopped playing with our Power Grips and got it all organised!
